Green Science Policy Institute, Berkeley, CA
The Green Science Policy Institute provides unbiased scientific data to government, industry and non-governmental organizations to reduce the use of toxic chemicals in consumer products. We promote research into safer alternatives and advocate for science based chemical policy to protect health and environment.
Under the current regulatory system, chemicals need not be tested for their health effects and their risks are not known. Humans and animals contain increasing levels of toxic and untested chemicals. These chemicals have been shown to cause, reproductive, developmental, thyroid, endocrine, and neurological disorders including birth defects, learning disorders, mental retardation, and hyperactivity in animal studies.
The Green Science Policy Institute works on the state, federal and international levels to limit of use of unneeded and toxic fire retardants and similar chemicals, while promoting green chemistry and a safer policy approach to chemical use. To learn more visit the Green Science Policy Institute.
Position Overview:
The Green Science Policy Institute, (GSP), is seeking an Associate Director who is passionate about bringing good science into policy. Our objective is to reduce the use of toxic chemicals to protect human and animal health and the global environment.
Reports to: Arlene Blum. Founder and President
Responsibilities:
*Work with Advisory Board members, President, and allies to develop a strategic vision and plan for the next 3- 5 years including fundraising and budgeting, communications strategy, organizational development and staffing.
*Develop and implement an effective organizational development program including foundation and individual donor programs.
*Develop and oversee systems to improve and facilitate the daily operations
*Track income and expenses on a regular basis; play a lead role in organizational budgeting to ensure financial responsibility and sustainability.
*Work with our fiscal sponsors and out President (whose primary responsibilities research, writing, speaking, and outreach) to ensure smooth operations of the Green Science Policy Institute.
*Along with president, represent the Green Science Policy Institute to the public, media, funders and allies.
Working Relationships:
*Internal: Frequent contact with President, staff and fiscal sponsors. Reports to Founder/President
*External: Responsible for developing relationships with potential funders to grow the resources of GSP; ongoing contact with our current funders and other supporters around the country and internationally, other non-profit organizations, and other stakeholders and strategic partners.
Qualifications:
Education, Knowledge, Experience, and Skills:
*A passion for bringing good science into policy decisions
*Bachelor's degree required. Advanced degree preferred.
*Extensive years experience working with non-profit or scientific organizations, including 5 in a leadership or management role
*Experience in establishing and implementing development programs, including foundation and individual donor fundraising
*Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal skills
*Highly organized, able to multi-task and attention to details
*Diplomatic and professional approach to problem solving
*Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team
*Self-motivated and able to work with minimal direction and supervision
*Computer literate and Internet savvy
*Experience in online and web-based advocacy, media, and communications
*Ability to travel within the U.S.
*Commitment to hard work and a professional, ethical, diverse, and fun workplace.
Work Skills, Style, and Location:
We seek a self-motivated, creative, hard working and fun addition to our team, someone who is comfortable both in providing his/her own leadership and in facilitating collaborative leadership processes. We seek someone with strong writing and verbal communication skills and who is comfortable with public speaking. It is essential this person is computer savvy. Knowledge of social networking and other on line advocacy and community building tools is a plus.
GSP is based in a small home office in the Berkeley hills, which is not easily accessible by BART. Executive Director can work virtually part or all of the time.
Compensation: Dependent on resources and experience
